Big Ben pinball rules and strategy

The Strategy

Big Ben uses B-I-G top lanes to build base bonus and light the right saucer for 5,000, while the B-E-N drops enable Double Bonus. Fill the base through top play, complete B-E-N only from safe angles, then protect the doubled bonus and take the saucer while 5,000 remains lit.

The goal

Send the ball to the top until the base bonus is full and B-I-G is complete. Then complete B-E-N for Complete all three large B-E-N drop targets. The game then doubles the end-of-ball bonus.. Resume top shots and collect the lit right saucer when its feed is safe.

  1. Plunge through a B-I-G lane that is not complete.

  2. Use both flippers to send the ball to the top. Build the base bonus to its maximum.

  3. Continue top shots until B-I-G lights the right saucer for 5,000.

  4. Test one B-E-N drop-target rebound. Complete B-E-N only while the returns remain controlled.

  5. From the right flipper, resume the safer shot to the top.

  6. From the left flipper, collect the lit right saucer only when the shot and kickout are safe.

  7. Read the saucer lamp after another B-I-G completion. Do not shoot it when Special gives no tournament points.

Alternative route: Top play only

Use this when B-E-N rebounds or right-saucer misses threaten a drain.

  1. Ignore the B-E-N drop targets.
  2. Send each controlled ball to the top.
  3. Use B-I-G lanes and the left rollovers to build score and bonus.
  4. Keep Complete all three large B-E-N drop targets. The game then doubles the end-of-ball bonus. unqualified rather than risk a dangerous rebound.

Each top B-I-G lane advances the base bonus, and a completed set lights the right saucer for 5,000.
B-E-N drops
Complete the three large B-E-N drop targets to enable Complete all three large B-E-N drop targets. The game then doubles the end-of-ball bonus. for the current ball.
Right saucer
The right saucer is worth 5,000 after one B-I-G completion, but a later completion can change it to Special.

Machine setup

  • Confirm Williams 1975 or licensed Segasa edition, ball count, replay and Special treatment, tilt, and maximum base bonus.
  • Read the right-saucer lamp after each B-I-G completion; confirm whether Special has tournament point value before collecting it.
  • Test B-E-N rebounds, the right-saucer kickout, top-lane registration, the open-gap plunge, and both routes back to the top.
