Excalibur pinball rules and strategy

The Strategy

Excalibur assigns one or more colors to four-target sets. Completing every required color lights a center-ramp lock; the replacement plunge starts two-ball Multiball, and the drop targets build a Jackpot collected only after Multiball ends.

The goal

Knock down all four targets for each required lit color, lock one ball at the center ramp, then plunge the replacement ball to start two-ball Multiball.

  1. Complete each required color

Time the plunge to light orange when possible, then knock down all four orange targets. The first Multiball needs one lit color; each later start adds another color until all four are required.

  2. Start Multiball

Shoot the center ramp to lock one ball, then plunge the replacement ball to start two-ball Multiball.

  3. Score the ramp and Jackpot

During Multiball, repeat the center ramp for 100,000 and one Shield bonus-multiplier advance. After Multiball, watch the drop targets and hit whichever target is flashing before its timer ends for Jackpot.

Need to know
Required target colors
The first Multiball requires all four targets in one lit color. Each later start adds another required color until all four colors are needed.
Skill plunge
Time the plunge to choose the first required color. The orange upper targets are commonly preferred because they are easier and return more safely than red.
Two-ball Multiball
Knock down all four targets for each required lit color, shoot the center ramp to lock, then plunge the replacement ball to begin two-ball play.

Machine setup

  • Confirm Gottlieb Excalibur from 1988, ball count, Extra Ball or Special conversion, and Jackpot timer.
  • Test the center-ramp reject, upper-playfield exits, passive-rubber rebounds, and all four target banks.
