Star Explorer pinball rules and strategy

Strategy summary

The goal

The left bonus lane and center bonus hole award points during play. Four pop bumpers and the upper rollovers provide other scoring. Either side button operates both flippers. The right outside lane returns the ball for another launch; the left outside lane loses it.

  1. Pop bumpers: The four round bumpers in the upper half of the playfield score 100 points per hit and kick the ball away. Two sit one above the other near the top, with another pair below them.

  2. Upper rollovers: The lanes at the upper left and upper right have scoring contacts across the playfield surface. Rolling the ball over these contacts scores 2,000 points. These are separate from the bonus lane farther down the left side.

  3. Left bonus lane: Send the ball through the marked bonus lane along the left side of the playfield to trigger its bonus scoring. On Star Explorer this is Galaxy Bonus; on Flying Aces it is Dive Bomb Alley.

  4. Center bonus hole: The round hole below the lower pair of pop bumpers awards bonus points when the ball enters. The machine completes the scoring, then kicks the ball back onto the playfield. This is a scoring hole, not the drain.

  5. Right ball return: The outside lane on the right is the free-ball route. It returns the ball to the shooter for another launch. Use the plunger again to resume play; this lane differs from the lost-ball route on the left.

  6. Losing a ball: A ball lost through the left outside lane or between the flippers advances the ball count. The next ball is served automatically. Losing the third ball ends the game; press the front reset button to start again.

Need to know
Start
Press the reset button on the front of the cabinet. It clears the score, sets the ball indicator to 1 and serves the ball to the shooter. Pull back and release the plunger to launch.
Game
One player plays three balls. Star Explorer and Flying Aces use the same feature layout with different artwork. Both flippers move together when either side button is pressed.
Tilt
A tilt stops scoring for the current ball. Scoring becomes available again when the next ball is served to the shooter.
